I started this painting early in 2020 to exhibit at Wakefield Cathedral later that year. When the PM announced the first coronavirus lockdown in the UK on 23rd March 2020 The Art House had to close its doors and I had to leave it in the studio.
During lockdown my makeshift home studio was a corner of the kitchen table. By the time I was able to return to the studio on 29th June 2020 there was no way of knowing when the exhibition might be possible, and I was absorbed in working on small paintings on board which I wanted to complete. From time to time I’d work on it but it wasn’t really moving forward. I was working on other paintings and planning.

On Monday 4th January something clicked, including the happy accident of  forgetting to take my laptop to the studio, and this painting was finally on the move again.

In the evening the PM announced the third national lockdown and The Art House advised studio holders that the building would be temporarily closed.
