The Hepworth Wakefield Cafe
until 25 September 2022

New ‘summer’ paintings are now on display for ‘In The Garden’ exhibition the cafe at The Hepworth Wakefield. The winter paintings that were on display at the start of the exhibition have all now sold, so I really wanted to make some new work for the exhibition. Each of the three new paintings was made en plein air, over several visits to the garden, since midsummer. The dates in the titles refer to the date that I finished the painting.

When I painted, on site, in winter the garden was a monochromatic seed-scape. Through spring I watched the forms and flowers gradually shift. In the height of the summer the garden is a verdant oasis jewelled with bright flowers.

“The Hepworth Wakefield Garden, designed by Tom Stuart-Smith, has become a source of inspiration for many visiting artists.
In The Garden, a new exhibition on display in our café, brings together seven artists – Sarah Abbott, Clare Curtis, Helen Riddle, Helen Thomas, Tony Wade, Studio Wald and Ellie Way – who have captured the garden in their work.”

The ‘In the Garden’ exhibition is free to visit. Please see The Hepworth Wakefield website for details of current exhibitions and gallery entry charges, and if you’re a Wakefield resident remember to take something with proof of address to qualify for free entry.

All of the works on display are available to buy from The Hepworth Wakefield or from the online shop (as my new paintings have just been hung they aren’t yet in the online shop at the time of writing)
